Life Sciences

ISSN: 0024-3205

Life Sciences is an international journal publishing articles that emphasize the molecular, cellular, and functional basis of therapy. The journal emphasizes the understanding of mechanism that is relevant to all aspects of human disease and translation to patients. All articles are rigorously reviewed. The Journal favors publication of full-length papers where modern scientific technologies are used to explain molecular, cellular and physiological mechanisms. Articles that merely report observations are rarely accepted. Recommendations from the Declaration of Helsinki or NIH guidelines for care and use of laboratory animals must be adhered to. Articles should be written at a level accessible to readers who are non-specialists in the topic of the article themselves, but who are interested in the research. The Journal welcomes mini-reviews on topics of wide interest to investigators in the life sciences. We particularly encourage submission of brief, focused reviews containing high-quality artwork and require the use of mechanistic summary diagrams.Manuscripts should present novel preclinical findings addressing questions of biological significance to human disease. Studies that fail to do so may be rejected without review. Quantitative conclusions must be based on truly quantitative methods. Life Sciences does not publish work on the actions of biological extracts of unknown chemical composition. Compounds studied must be of known chemical structure and concentration. The study must be reproducible; materials used must be available to other researchers so they can repeat the experiment. Clinical studies may be considered if they expand understanding of mechanism, but the journal does not encourage clinical trial reports.Four common reasons for rejection include: out of scope (the manuscript does not conform to the goal of identification of mechanisms related to therapy for human disease); too preliminary (manuscript is based on a limited amount of experimental data diminishing significance); lack of novelty (manuscript is well done but does not address a significant question); unidentified structure (actions of biological extracts of unknown chemical composition).

Marine Geology

ISSN: 0025-3227eISSN: 1872-6151

Marine Geology is the premier international journal on marine geological processes in the broadest sense. We seek papers that are comprehensive, interdisciplinary and synthetic that will be lasting contributions to the field. Although most papers are based on regional studies, they must demonstrate new findings of international significance. We accept papers on subjects as diverse as seafloor hydrothermal systems, beach dynamics, early diagenesis, microbiological studies in sediments, palaeoclimate studies and geophysical studies of the seabed. We encourage papers that address emerging new fields. We insist that the papers are concerned with the marine realm and that they deal with geology: with rocks, sediments, and physical and chemical processes affecting them. Papers should address scientific hypotheses: highly descriptive data compilations or papers that deal only with marine management and risk assessment should be submitted to other journals. Papers on laboratory or modelling studies must demonstrate direct relevance to marine processes or deposits. The primary criteria for acceptance of papers is that the science is of high quality, novel, significant, and of broad international interest.Benefits to authorsWe also provide many author benefits, such as free PDFs, a liberal copyright policy, special discounts on Elsevier publications and much more. Meat Science

ISSN: 0309-1740

The qualities of meat – its composition, nutritional value, wholesomeness and consumer acceptability – are largely determined by the events and conditions encountered by the embryo, the live animal and the postmortem musculature. The control of these qualities, and their further enhancement, are thus dependent on a fuller understanding of the commodity at all stages of its existence – from the initial conception, growth and development of the organism to the time of slaughter and to the ultimate processing, preparation, distribution, cooking and consumption of its meat.It is the purpose of Meat Science to provide an appropriate medium for the dissemination of interdisciplinary and international knowledge on all the factors which influence the properties of meat. The journal is predominantly concerned with the flesh of mammals; however, contributions on poultry will only be considered, if they demonstrate that they would increase the overall understanding of the relationship between the nature of muscle and the quality of the meat which muscles become post mortem Papers on large birds (eg emus, ostrich's) and wild capture mammals and crocodile will be considered.Benefits to authorsWe also provide many author benefits, such as free PDFs, a liberal copyright policy, special discounts on Elsevier publications and much more. Mechanics Research Communications

ISSN: 0093-6413

Mechanics Research Communications publishes as rapidly as possible manuscripts of high standards but restricted length. It aims at providing a fast means of communication and of exchange of ideas among workers in Mechanics, at offering an effective method of bringing new results quickly to the public and at establishing an informal vehicle for the discussion of ideas that may still be in the formative stages.Mechanics Research Communications will publish both scientific and applied contributions. In either category, papers may be one of three types:1. Complete: Self-contained, normally no more than about twelve manuscript pages long. The essence and motivation of the communication must be made clear in a first section, called Introduction, of length appropriate to that of the entire article and written so as to be understandable to the majority of workers in Mechanics. No further abstract is required. The remainder of the contribution may, of course, be addressed to specialists.2. Work in Progress and Preliminary Results: Accounts of current research and of tentative results even if of a conjectural but well documented nature, about three or four manuscript pages in length.3. Letters: Not over two manuscript pages long usually dealing with previously printed contributions or with matters of general interest to the Mechanics community, to be written in non-aggressive language. After acceptance of letters referring to previous communications, the authors of the original articles will be informed and allowed four weeks time to submit a written reply. The letter and the reply will be printed simultaneously. In addition, special features may be added from time to time. The field of Mechanics will be understood in a broad sense, no attempt being made to limit it or to provide it with a precise definition. It will encompass the behavior of fluids, solids, particles, continua, rigid bodies, mechanisms, systems and so forth. It will include theoretical as well as applied and experimental researches, whether aimed at fundamental scientific advances or at practical engineering results.

Mechanisms of Development

ISSN: 0925-4773

Mechanisms of Development is the Official Journal of The International Society of Developmental Biologists which supports the world-wide community of developmental biologists.Mechanisms of Development is an international journal whose purpose is to communicate contemporary studies in developmental biology in any system, including animals, plants and other models. These studies can focus on embryogenesis and/or post-embryonic development of tissues and organs. In addition, MOD publishes studies in which in vitro approaches are used to study mechanisms relevant to developmental biology; for example cell culture assays to study stem cell properties or basic cell biological mechanisms. Areas of particular interest include:Regulation of stem cell and progenitor maintenance, cell differentiation, and pattern formation. The developmental control of cell proliferation and death, and of tissue growth and size.Mechanisms of cell and tissue morphogenesis, including migration, shape and polarity, and the roles of physical forces in development.Evolution of developmental mechanisms.Studies can focus on molecular and/or cellular mechanisms, and we also welcome studies using modelling approaches that are firmly rooted in experimental data. The Editors are strongly committed to fair, transparent and rapid review. The criteria for publication are: (1) That the study is novel, interesting, and advances understanding of a developmental mechanism(s); (2) That the conclusions of the study are supported by the data. We ask reviewers not to request further experiments unless these are essential to support the principal conclusions. Reviewers will provide constructive comments to enable any improvements required to make the work suitable for publication. We normally allow only one round of significant revision.Mechanisms of Development does not publish descriptive studies of gene expression patterns and molecular screens; for submission of such studies see Gene Expression Patterns

Medical Hypotheses

ISSN: 0306-9877

Medical Hypotheses is a forum for ideas in medicine and related biomedical sciences. It will publish interesting and important theoretical papers that foster the diversity and debate upon which the scientific process thrives. The Aims and Scope of Medical Hypotheses are no different now from what was proposed by the founder of the journal, the late Dr David Horrobin. In his introduction to the first issue of the Journal, he asks 'what sorts of papers will be published in Medical Hypotheses? and goes on to answer 'Medical Hypotheses will publish papers which describe theories, ideas which have a great deal of observational support and some hypotheses where experimental support is yet fragmentary'. (Horrobin DF, 1975 Ideas in Biomedical Science: Reasons for the foundation of Medical Hypotheses. Medical Hypotheses Volume 1, Issue 1, January-February 1975, Pages 1-2.). Medical Hypotheses was therefore launched, and still exists today, to give novel, radical new ideas and speculations in medicine open-minded consideration, opening the field to radical hypotheses which would be rejected by most conventional journals. Papers in Medical Hypotheses take a standard scientific form in terms of style, structure and referencing. The journal therefore constitutes a bridge between cutting-edge theory and the mainstream of medical and scientific communication, which ideas must eventually enter if they are to be critiqued and tested against observations.Submitted manuscripts will be reviewed by the Editor and external reviewers to ensure their scientific merit. All reviewers will be fully aware of the Aims and Scope of the Journal and will be judging the premise, originality and plausibility of the hypotheses submitted.Abstracting/indexing:Medical Hypotheses is indexed and abstracted in: ADONIS, BIOSIS, Chemical Abstracts, Elsevier BIOBASE/Current Contents/Life Sciences, EMBASE Excerpta Medica, Index Medicus, Medical Documentation Service, Reference Update, Research Alert, Science Citation Index, SciSearch UMI (Microfilm), Russian Academy of Science.

Medical Photonics

Optical technologies have become a central part in today's clinical medicine, both in diagnostics and therapy. Medical research as well as clinical routine heavily depends on technical instrumentation. A wide variety of photonic technologies have been developed for clinical monitoringof physiological or pathological parameters. Advanced optical techniques using:

  • Spectroscopic techniques
  • Fluorescence
  • fluorescence lifetime measurements
  • Raman spectroscopy
  • OCT
all techniques are used for establishing a medical diagnosis and therapy monitoring.

Moreover, a broad range of therapeutic approaches has been developed (photodynamic therapy, laser dissection, theranostics), ranging from molecular, single cell based approaches to macroscopic surgical strategies.

All of these techniques have gained by the advances in molecular biology and genetics, allowing specific targeting or marking of all kinds of molecules or tissues, from sensing and microscopy over optogenetics to clinical therapy.

There is a clear demand for a strong journal that covers these emerging technologies as well as biomedical research based on new photonic technologies. Medical Photonics aims at filling this gap.

Microchemical Journal

ISSN: 0026-265XeISSN: 1095-9149

The Microchemical Journal is a peer reviewed journal devoted to all aspects and phases of analytical chemistry and chemical analysis. The Microchemical Journal publishes articles which are at the forefront of modern analytical chemistry and cover innovations in the techniques to the finest possible limits. This includes fundamental aspects, instrumentation, new developments, innovative and novel methods and applications including environmental and clinical field.Traditional classical analytical methods such as spectrophotometry and titrimetry as well as established instrumentation methods such as flame and graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry, gas chromatography, and modified glassy or carbon electrode electrochemical methods will be considered, provided they show significant improvements and novelty compared to the established methods. The journal does not consider routine analytical method development in such areas as pharmaceutical samples, chromatography, minor incremental changes such as sample preparation and pre-concentration for electrochemical, chromatography and spectrochemical methods. Methods considered will not be waters or situations where the methods cannot determine the molecules or metals of interest in real samples and depends on spikes, or simply using standard chemometric methods. Fragmentation of work is strongly discouraged. The journal was established in the late 1950's as a journal devoted to the rapidly developing field of microchemistry. As the area of microchemistry has evolved into analyses in microgram masses and microvolumes (and lower), lower detection limits, and more sophisticated and compact instrumentation, the Microchemical Journal has continued to evolve and change with this growing and expanding area, covering now analytical chemical research in its broadest sense. The journal has published numerous special issues devoted to topics and well as selected conferences. The journal also considers original reviews.
