Genetics Research is a key forum for original research on all aspects of genetics. Building on the success and history of its previous incarnation, Genetical Research, the journal has a publishing remit that provides comprehensive coverage of subjects vital to the field, including: evolutionary and population genetics, genetics of complex traits, quantitative and statistical genetics, bioinformatics, genomics, molecular and developmental genetics, Evo-Devo, conservation genetics and environmental genetics. On the empirical side, papers reporting studies that have broad implications using a range of organisms, from well-established genetic model organisms (Drosophila, C. elegans, mice, Arabidopsis, zebrafish, Xenopus) and agricultural species (rice, maize, wheat, cows, pigs, sheep, chickens) to humans are encouraged. Genetics Selection Evolution is an open access, peer-reviewed, online journal dedicated to original research on all aspects of genetics and selection in farm animal species and in other species that provide novel and/or relevant insights into the genetics of farm animals.

With the vast, recent increase in the amount and spectrum of available genetic, genomic, phenomic, and other -omic data, there is an ever-increasing requirement for the collaboration and successful integration of varied results, techniques, and methods in furthering the advancement of the future of genetics to benefit farm animals and associated production systems.

The journal Genetics Selection Evolution focuses on contributing to these developments by providing a high-visibility forum for the dissemination of original reports, reviews, and perspectives that will prompt new insights and discussions, as well as broaden the readers’ scientific interests.

Genetics Selection Evolution publishes results from all levels of study, from the gene to the quantitative trait, from the individual to the population, the breed or the species. Contributions concerning both the biological approach, from molecular genetics to quantitative genetics, as well as the mathematical approach, from population genetics to statistics, are welcome. Specific areas of interest include but are not limited to: statistical genetics and genomics, breeding objectives, development and analysis of new phenotypes and large-scale phenotyping, analysis of whole-genome and other -omics data, genetic evaluation and prediction models, genomic and other selection and breeding strategies, use of biotechnology in animal breeding, integration of heterogeneous genomic data, applied and experimental selection, gene and QTL mapping and characterization, functional genomics, characterization and management of genetic diversity of populations, theory and mathematical models relevant to genetics of farm animal populations. Genome Biology and Evolution (GBE) publishes leading original research at the interface between evolutionary biology and genomics. Papers considered for publication report novel evolutionary findings that concern natural genome diversity, population genomics, the structure, function, organisation and expression of genomes, comparative genomics, proteomics, and environmental genomic interactions. Major evolutionary insights from the fields of computational biology, structural biology, developmental biology, and cell biology are also considered, as are theoretical advances in the field of genome evolution. GBE’s scope embraces genome-wide evolutionary investigations at all taxonomic levels and for all forms of life — within populations or across domains. Its aims are to further the understanding of genomes in their evolutionary context and further the understanding of evolution from a genome-wide perspective.GBE is owned by the Society for Molecular Biology and Evolution (SMBE). Motivated by the continued growth of the field, SMBE conducted a grass-roots survey in 2007 to investigate the needs of the field regarding new publication outlets. The survey elicited a resounding response from members of SMBE and other scientists in the fields of genomics and molecular evolution. The key findings from that survey were that the field wanted an on-line only journal that was devoted specifically to the areas of genome evolution and comparative genomics and that was published under an Open Access model. The response of SMBE was to launch GBE in order to serve those needs of the field. The SMBE meeting attracts about 800 participants each year. As a reflection of the rapid growth of genomic technologies, about half of the science presented at each SMBE meeting is about genomics. With the help of the evolutionary expertise that is gathered in SMBE, GBE is positioned and designed to set the highest standards for papers in the growing field of evolutionary genomics.
