Communication Research Reports

Communication Research Reports publishes brief empirical articles (10 pages or less, excluding tables and references) on a variety of topics pertaining to human communication. Studies in the general areas of interpersonal, intercultural, life-span, nonverbal, small group, organizational, instructional, health, persuasive, mass, political, and computer-mediated communication are appropriate. Although the main portion of the paper should be devoted to a thorough reporting and interpretation of results, a concise but cogent theoretical rationale and literature review must also be included. At the Editor's discretion, some manuscripts may be designated as Brief Reports once they have undergone the initial review process. Brief Reports should be no longer than three pages (excluding tables and references). Their purpose is to highlight a specific finding and its relevance to the literature. All sections traditionally included in a paper should be present, but they must be very brief and to the point. Any extraneous information must be eliminated. Brief Reports SHOULD NOT BE SUBMITTED to CRR; rather, they will be employed at the Editor's discretion. Also at the discretion of the Editor will be one manuscript per issue designated as a Spotlight on Method/Analysis piece. These articles will be solicited by the Editor and will be 5-8 pages in length (excluding tables and references) highlighting topics that will range from novel methodological approaches and/or statistical techniques to common misconceptions/issues of contemporary controversy related to method/analysis. Each issue of CRR will contain one such manuscript that will be solicited and/or determined by the Editor.Communication Research Reports is philosophically committed to publishing the highest quality brief empirical articles derived from a variety of research areas within the discipline. Although Communication Research Reports is supported by ECA, a regional communication association, it has a national and international readership and is considered by many leaders in the field to be the best source for short research reports on communication. Communication Research and Practice aims to publish research that contributes to international scholarship and practice in the broadly defined field of communication. The journal aims to be broadly inclusive and interdisciplinary, with a particular interest in such fields as: digital media and internet studies; organisational and interpersonal communication; journalism, public relations and advertising; intercultural communication; international communication; and political communication. The journal will be open to contributions from across humanities and social sciences, and to contributions relating to communications practice (e.g. public relations, journalism, visual communication, digital media practice), and applications of communication theory (e.g. promotional campaigns, organisational and industry analyses, public policy deliberations).

The journal is supported by the Australian and New Zealand Communication Association (ANZCA). It derives its primary intellectual identity from the contribution of scholars in Australia, Aotearoa New Zealand, and the Asia-Pacific region, while also publishing work of interest to international readers, and research by international scholars that ensures issues and concerns relevant to this region are examined in international contexts. Communication Research and Practice will publish original empirical studies and essays commenting on current issues relevant to the region, as well as papers that advance theoretical and conceptual development in the communication field. It is particularly interested in supporting original and innovative work by early career researchers in this region.

Articles should be 6,000-8,000 words in length, and must not exceed 9,000 words including tables, references, captions, footnotes and endnotes. Book reviews, notes and commentaries may be shorter in length.

The Communication Review seeks a synthesis of concerns traditional to the fields of communication and media studies. The journal's heuristic division of the field into three analytical perspectives provides a natural structure for creating new knowledge across conventional disciplinary boundaries:Communication and Culture, probing the questions of producing meaning and interpretation by way of analyzing culture through the visual and dramatic arts, literature, sociology, anthropology, and in the interdisciplinary tradition of cultural studies.Communication as a Social Force, focusing on the historical development and contemporary transformation of media and communication, telecommunications, and information systems, emphasizing their political-economic, technological, and institutional dynamics.Communication and Mind, examining the individual socially constituted through language and other media in their cultural, social, and economic contexts.The editors view these as different theoretical perspectives on the study of communication processes. They particularly encourage historical work, feminist work, and visual work, and invite submissions from those employing critical theoretical and empirical approaches to a range of topics under the general rubric of communication and media studies research.The Communication Review also functions as a review of current work in the field. Towards this end, the editors are always open to proposals for special issues that interrogate and examine current controversies in the field. We also welcome non-traditionally constructed articles which critically examine and review current sub-fields of and controversies within communication and media studies; we offer an expedited review process for timely statements. Communication Teacher

Three types of manuscripts will be considered for publication in the journal. First,instructional activities that can be conducted in either the K-12 or college classroom will be considered. Second, manuscripts focused on communication education assessment of student learning, classroom practices (K-12 or college), or program development will be considered, and third, original teaching activity with a link to assessment articles will be encouraged. Original Teaching Activities Single Class Activities. Communication educators in all contexts are invited to submit original teaching activities that can be implemented in the classroom. Teaching activities that can be used in any communication course (i.e., public speaking, hybrid, communication research methods, communication technologies, communication theory, family, gender, health, interpersonal, intercultural, mass, organizational, public relations, rhetoric, small group) are welcome. Each submission should contain the following components: (1) a brief title; (2) the course(s) for which the activity is intended; (3) the objective(s) for the activity; (4) a brief theoretical rationale for conducting the activity; (5) a description/explanation of the activity, including any preparation/preliminary steps and materials needed; (6) a debriefing paragraph, including typical results; (7) an appraisal of the activity, including any limitations or variations; and (8) references. Single Class submissions should generally contain no more than 2000 words. Unit Activities. Instructors frequently create an original teaching activity that is conducted throughout an entire class unit (e.g., Relational communication unit on "Conflict in Relationships") that spans several days or weeks. A unit activity should follow the same format as described for the single class activity, and should contain no more than 2500 words. Semester-long Activities. Original teaching activities that outline a semester-long project or approach to an entire course are also encouraged. These manuscripts should follow the same format as described for single class activity and should generally contain no more than 3000 words. Original Teaching Activity-to-Assessment Articles In many cases, original teaching activities are assessed for meeting student needs and teacher goals. With this in mind, authors may be encouraged to create a series of articles that create a link between practice and assessment. For this series, the author may submit BOTH articles simultaneously or the editor may invite the author to submit an assessment activity based on the published original teaching activity (single, unit, or semester-long). These two manuscripts should follow the same format as described for one of the three class activities and the educational assessment article (described below) with an established link between the two clearly discussed. Educational Assessment Articles Communication educators in all contexts are invited to submit original assessment research. Assessment involves systematic reflection of instructional practices and allows communication educators to monitor student learning as well as improve the quality of specific courses or overall programs. Assessment articles should be data driven. Data can be qualitative or quantitative. Assessment research provides educators an opportunity to modify their instructional practices based on the results of such studies. Each submission should contain the following components: (1) a brief title; (2) the course or program for which the assessment was conducted; (3) an abstract of no more than 100 words; (4) a brief statement of the problem and theoretical rationale; (5) the research question(s) or hypothesis(es); (6) the method for data collection; (7) the results; (8) a discussion of the implications of the results on instructional practice; and (9) references. Submissions should generally contain no more than 8,000 words.

Communication and Critical/Cultural Studies is a journal founded in 2004 that publishes scholarship for an international readership on communication as a theory, practice, technology, and discipline of power. The journal features critical inquiry that cuts across academic boundaries to focus on social, political, and cultural practices from the standpoint of communication. It promotes critical reflection on the requirements of a more democratic culture by giving attention to subjects such as, but not limited to, class, race, ethnicity, gender, ability, sexuality, polity, public sphere, nation, environment, and globalization. Essays are selected as academically sound, rhetorically self-reflexive, intellectually innovative, and conceptually relevant to democratic concerns in their orientation toward communication and culture.
