The Black Scholar
Launched in the USA in 1969 The Black Scholar (TBS) is the first modern black studies and research journal. It was founded on the premise that black writers, scholars, activists and artists could participate in dialogue within its pages. TBS' primary mission has been to chronicle, analyze and debate the conditions of and the emancipatory efforts by black people, against a multitude of oppressions that include and cross class, nationality, gender, generation, sexuality, and ideology. Due in part to the impact of the journal, Black Studies, Africana Studies, Diaspora Studies and other sub-disciplines have become legitimate spaces of scholarly inquiry. However there are few public intellectual spaces that focus on black thought, are dedicated to the new multiplicity of black perspectives (or perspectives on race) that have emerged through these disciplines, and engage with the new issues and concerns facing black communities worldwide. The Black Scholar is one of those spaces. Also, our rich mix of the scholarly and the artistic, the professional and the public/non-specialist, remains rare, as is our openness to different forms and techniques of political engagement.
Building on the journal’s initial vision, TBS aims to not only “unite the academy and the street” but also participate in a global black intellectual and cultural world that has multiple contexts and a range of materials and opinions far greater than when the journal was founded. The journal continues to engage and cultivate differential black political conversations and cultural interests (African American, African, European, Latin American, for example) while maintaining its core commitment to tough minded thinking and an overall liberationist intent. This means that we welcome submissions (in English and in translation) from anywhere in the world as long as they meet the criteria articulated on our website or in the journal.
Though TBS has always engaged issues of gender, a greater focus on sexuality is a part of our reimagining; and though the journal has always focused on race, class, power and culture, such debates have to be rendered contemporary. Of particular interest are submissions about the prison industrial complex, the current, often violent re-organization of the African continent, emerging sites and forms of struggle, new forms of popular culture and art throughout the black Diaspora, new migratory patterns, technology and social media, generational differences and sometimes quite radical distinctions in opinion and ideology. All disciplines and fields are welcome as long as they appreciate the unique opportunity the journal offers - to speak to others outside one’s area. But perhaps most important, we imagine ourselves as the forum for ideas and conversations that have yet to emerge.
All research articles in the journal will undergo a rigorous peer review based on initial editor evaluation and then at least two anonymous referees. Creative or public pieces will also undergo a rigorous evaluation, but by members of our intellectual community whose work and interests are comparable to those of the work submitted.The Journal of Peasant Studies
The Journal of Peasant Studies is increasing to 5 issues per volume from 2011 The Journal of Peasant Studies is one of the leading journals in the field of rural development. It was founded on the initiative of Terence J. Byres and its first editors were Byres, Charles Curwen and Teodor Shanin. It provokes and promotes critical thinking about social structures, institutions, actors and processes of change in and in relation to the rural world. It encourages inquiry into how agrarian power relations between classes and other social groups are created, understood, contested and transformed. The Journal pays special attention to questions of 'agency' of marginalized groups in agrarian societies, particularly their autonomy and capacity to interpret - and change - their conditions. The Journal promotes contributions that question mainstream prescriptions or interrogate orthodoxies in radical thinking. It welcomes contributions that explore theoretical, policy and political alternatives. The Journal encourages contributions about a wide range of contemporary and historical questions and perspectives related to rural development. These are issues that confront peasants, farmers, rural labourers, migrant workers, indigenous peoples, forest dwellers, pastoralists, fisherfolk and rural youth - both female and male - in different parts of the world. The editor welcomes contributions from scholars in the fields of political science, development studies, anthropology, sociology, geography, history, economics, law, cultural studies, gender studies, environmental studies, and interdisciplinary fields. There are three sections in the Journal: Articles, Grassroots Voices, and Reviews Section. Survey articles are encouraged and special issues are published occasionally. Thematic cluster of articles and a debate subsection will be published from time to time.The Grassroots Voices section encourages views that are written and presented in non-academic style but provide important insights and information relevant to critical rural development studies and is guest edited. Essays in this section, which are generally shorter (at about 3,000 words) include: commentaries, interviews, field mission reports, event analyses, and movement profiles. The Reviews section publishes reviews of important theoretical or policy-oriented books or films written for diverse audiences. The Krishna Bharadwaj Prize and the Eric Wolf Prize From 2009 the Krishna Bharadwaj & Eric Wolf prize will be awarded once every two years for an outstanding article published in The Journal of Peasant Studies (JPS) by a 'young scholar'. A young scholar is someone who is either a graduate student or a scholar who has held a PhD degree for no longer than four years when the article was first submitted to the journal. An article jointly authored by a young and a senior scholar qualifies. The award commemorates two long-standing and distinguished members of the Editorial Advisory Board of JPS: the political economist Krishna Bharadwaj (1935-92) and the anthropologist Eric Wolf (1923-99). All articles, except for Notes and Communications, published in the relevant volumes are eligible. Analytical creativity and originality is the basis for the awards. The submission fees are used to support journal related activities.Economics Letters aims to be a valuable addition to the specialist literature, offering quick dissemination and easy accessibility of new results, models and methods in all fields of economic research. All researchers are welcome to submit their articles to Economics Letters, and especially young researchers and advanced graduate students are encouraged to submit their articles.The "letter" format consists of concise communications, which are a vehicle to quickly communicate important pieces of new research. For instance, a theorist could submit to Economics Letters a thought-provoking example before the analysis is extended to a general theorem in a fully fledged paper that will go elsewhere. African Identities
African Identities provides a critical forum for the examination of African and diasporic expressions, representations and identities. The aim of this journal is to open up various horizons in the field: to encourage the development of theory and practice in a wider spread of disciplinary approaches; to promote conceptual innovation and to provide a venue for the entry of new perspectives. The journal focuses on the myriad of ways in which cultural production creates zones of profound expressive possibilities by continually generating texts and contexts of reflexive import.With an emphasis on gender, class, nation, marginalisation, "otherness" and difference, the journal explores how African identities, either by force of expediency or contingency, create layered terrains of (ex)change, decentre dominant meanings, paradigms and certainties. IIE Transactions on Occupational Ergonomics and Human Factors
Ergonomics and Human Factors researchers and practitioners are concerned with understanding and improving human interactions in and with diverse systems. Through the development and application of knowledge regarding human capabilities and limitations, they seek to improve human-system performance and enhance human health and safety. While ergonomics and human factors research and application span diverse aspects of daily life, the IIE Transactions on Occupational Ergonomics & Human Factors (IIE TOEHF) has a primary and fundamental emphasis on people at work.
IIE TOEHF is devoted to compiling and disseminating knowledge on occupational ergonomics and human factors theory, technology, application, and practice, across diverse areas and using a variety of approaches. Papers will cover a wide range of topics including, but not limited to the major domains of physical, cognitive, and organizational ergonomics and human factors. Multidisciplinary investigations are particularly encouraged, and the journal welcomes a variety of submissions, including those that are analytical, experimental, applications, or viewpoints. Submissions from practitioners are also strongly encouraged (e.g., case reports, emerging issues, applications, and letters to the editor).

The overall aim of the Journal of Nanomaterials is to bring science and applications together on nanoscale and nanostructured materials with emphasis on synthesis, processing, characterization, and applications of materials containing true nanosize dimensions or nanostructures that enable novel/enhanced properties or functions. Phase Transitions is the only journal devoted exclusively to this important subject. It provides a focus for papers on most aspects of phase transitions in condensed matter. Philosophical Magazine Letters is the rapid communications part of the highly respected Philosophical Magazine, which was first published in 1798. Its Editors consider for publication short and timely contributions in the field of condensed matter describing original results, theories and concepts relating to the structure and properties of crystalline materials, ceramics, polymers, glasses, amorphous films, composites and soft matter. Articles emphasizing experimental, theoretical and modelling studies on solids, especially those that interpret behaviour on a microscopic, atomic or electronic scale, are particularly appropriate. Manuscripts are considered on the strict condition that they have been submitted only to Philosophical Magazine Letters, that they have not been published already, and that they are not under consideration for publication elsewhere. Contributions to Philosophical Magazine Letters must report original research and will be subjected to review by referees at the discretion of the Editors.By submitting a manuscript to Philosophical Magazine Letters authors are agreeing that CrossCheck software may be used to screen their work for unoriginal material.
