Journal of Substance Abuse Treatment

ISSN: 0740-5472

The Journal of Substance Abuse Treatment (JSAT) features original research, systematic reviews and reports on meta-analyses and, with editorial approval, special articles on the assessment and treatment of substance use and addictive disorders, including alcohol, illicit and prescription drugs, and nicotine. JSAT values high quality empirical research that is relevant for translation by treatment practitioners from all disciplines and across any setting where persons with substance use problems are encountered. The editors emphasize that JSAT articles should address assessment techniques and treatment approaches that have clear relevance for routine practice. Accordingly, the scope of JSAT includes health services research, including the design, organization, delivery mechanisms and workforce characteristics of treatments in routine settings. It is the policy of JSAT that treatment research for individuals with substance use disorders meet the same scientific evaluative standards as treatments for those with any other health-related condition or illness. Thus, research articles submitted for publication in JSAT are expected to achieve the same empirical standards of reliability, validity, and empiricism. Theoretical models, clinical experience, and case vignettes are recognized as important supplements to, but not as substitutes for, research-based evidence. It is recognized that research-based evidence may take many forms, such as randomized controlled trials; case-controlled field evaluations; or time series evaluations. In early stages of research development, qualitative study or small trials may be appropriate and necessary first steps. Regardless of the specific type of study, authors of research articles should aim to: (1) Use one or more reasonable comparison or control conditions in the design and analysis of collected data, (2) Use data collection methods and measures that have been previously validated in the subject population, and (3) Analyze data (qualitative or quantitative) with the use of appropriate statistical methods.Authors must insure that the research as reported was conducted ethically, and that all protections to human subject participants were afforded. This insurance must be verified by the appropriate institutional review board or committee for the protection of human subjects. In addition, the editors of JSAT will not consider articles that use pejorative and stereotypical expressions when discussing individuals who suffer from substance use disorders. In drawing conclusions, authors are expected to use a parsimonious, cautious and conservative approach in the interpretation of findings. Hyperbole and overgeneralization beyond the data are considered irresponsible.

Call for Papers
Journal of Cost Analysis and Parametrics

Editor-in-Chief: Ricardo Valerdi, University of Arizona
Managing Editor: Christian Smart, Missile Defense Agency

The Journal of Cost Analysis and Parametrics is the official publication of the International Cost Estimating and Analysis Association. It is a scholarly journal featuring peer-reviewed articles that provide the latest developments in cost estimating, cost analysis, and cost management. Its objective is to improve the theory and practice of cost estimating, analysis, management, and research results among cost-analysis educators and practitioners around the world.

The Journal seeks to publish research that is interesting, intellectually rigorous, and advances the body of knowledge of cost analysis and parametrics. Papers involving a variety of topics, settings, and research methods are solicited. Manuscripts related to a broad range of application areas for any sector of the economy including manufacturing, financial services, construction, retail, defense, and not-for-profit are desired. New theories, topical areas, and research methods are encouraged. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • Cost model development and validation
  • Decision analysis
  • Risk and uncertainty
  • Simulation
  • Trade studies
  • Learning curves
  • Productivity assessment
  • Earned value management
  • Design to cost
  • Lifecycle costing
  • Statistical techniques for analyzing data
  • Data visualization

Submissions will be evaluated based on their: (1) readability; (2) relevance; and (3) reliability. All papers accepted for publication in the Journal must have a high level of readability. Poor readability can impede the ability of a reviewer to evaluate the contribution of a paper and may lead to rejection. It is necessary to ensure the paper can be readily understood by individuals involved in the area discussed in the paper. References should not impede the flow of the paper and unnecessary obscure jargon should not be used. If applicable, details of the statistical methodology should be in an appendix rather than in the body of the paper if they are not central to the focus of the manuscript.

The second criterion is relevance. A paper is relevant if it has the potential to influence cost estimating, analysis, or management. A paper that appeals to a broad spectrum of readers or is unique or innovative has a better possibility of influencing practice and theory development and therefore, is more relevant than a paper without these features.

The third criterion is reliability. The paper is reliable if the conclusions of the paper can be reasonably inferred from the arguments. Reliability is easier to assess when a paper is statistical or involves empirical research with which the reviewer is familiar. Authors can improve the probability of acceptance of a paper by including a section on the limitations of the research techniques.

Authors are advised to consult previous issues of JCAP – and its predecessor journals – for suitable topics to submit for consideration. For questions from potential authors please contact Ricardo Valerdi, Editor-in-Chief (rvalerdi@arizona.edu).

All submitted manuscripts are subject to initial appraisal by the Editor, and, if found suitable for further consideration, to peer review by independent, anonymous expert referees. All peer review is double blind and submission is online via ScholarOne Manuscripts.

Nuclear Materials and Energy

eISSN: 2352-1791
DOAJ Logo
The open-access journal Nuclear Materials and Energy is devoted to the growing field of research for material application in the production of nuclear energy. Nuclear Materials and Energy publishes original research articles of up to 6 pages in length.
Nuclear Materials and Energy is supported scientifically by the Max-Planck-Institut für Plasmaphysik, Garching, Germany for two reasons:
  • Nuclear Materials and Energy is the first fully open-access journal in this field. The Max-Planck-Society has started the Open-Access Initiative in 2003 realizing that a stable, competitive, and quality-assured OA publication system offers immense benefits to the research community. Particularly research using public funding has the responsibility to make results freely available to all interested readers.
  • At the same time it is of paramount importance that the transition to OA must preserve or even improve the quality standards of the present subscription-based model. The Journal adopts a rigorous peer-reviewing policy to guarantee high quality standards. A broad Editorial Board of renowned experts covering the full scope of the journal helps in the evaluation of submitted manuscripts.

The scientific support by the Max-Planck Institut für Plasmaphysik also underlines its contribution to the field of research on plasma-facing materials and determines the scientific scope of the Journal. The emphasis will be on materials employed in reactors where they are exposed to extreme environments in terms of radiation, temperature and corrosive conditions. The main topics are:

• Fusion reactor materials, including plasma-facing components, blankets, insulators and magnets.
• Material erosion and transport in the boundary of fusion plasmas and its effect on the incident plasma conditions.
• Interaction of plasmas, ion beams, electron beams and intense heat fluxes with materials with emphasis on lifetime, tritium retention and permeation, and structural stability.
• Reactor materials enduring radiation doses at very high temperature far beyond the capability of materials now available for components, but excluding fuel cycle, actinide compounds, and nuclear waste.
• The material behaviour in the interaction with reactor coolants during normal operation and in accidental conditions.
• Materials behaviour addressing the release of fuel, activated dust and reaction products during accidental conditions, and the physical and chemical interactions of reactor core and containment materials.
• Neutron and charged particle radiation effects in materials, including defects, gas retention and permeation, transmutations, microstructural changes, phase changes and macroscopic properties.

The manuscript must contain new experimental results as well as theoretical evaluations and computer simulations. The manuscript must focus on materials science and engineering related to application in nuclear energy production. Thus, all topics within nuclear science and engineering or materials science and engineering without relevance to energy production do not necessarily fall within the scope.

The Journal is dedicated to original research manuscripts with a maximum length of six journal pages. The Journal can stimulate research and interest by soliciting invited reviews also exceeding the 6 page limit.

Journal of Business Finance & Accounting

ISSN: 0306-686XeISSN: 1468-5957

The Journal of Business Finance and Accounting exists to publish high quality research papers in accounting, finance and their interface. The interface is especially apparent in the areas of corporate governance, financial reporting and communication, financial performance measurement and managerial reward and control structures. A feature of the Journal is that it recognises that informational problems are pervasive in financial markets and business organisations, and that accounting plays an important role in resolving such problems. The Journal welcomes both theoretical and empirical contributions. Nonetheless, theoretical papers should yield novel testable implications, and empirical papers should be theoretically well-motivated. The Editors view accounting and finance as being closely related to economics and, as a consequence, papers submitted will often have theoretical motivations that are grounded in economics. The Journal, however, also seeks papers that complement economics-based theorising with theoretical developments originating in other social science disciplines or traditions. While many papers in the Journal use econometric or related empirical methods, the Editors also welcome contributions that use other empirical research methods.Although the scope of the Journal is broad, the Journal is not a suitable outlet for highly abstract mathematical papers, or empirical papers with inadequate theoretical motivation. Also, papers that study asset pricing, or the operations of financial markets, should have direct implications for one or more of preparers, regulators, users of financial statements, and corporate financial decision-makers, or at least should have implications for the development of future research relevant to such users. All article submissions should be made online - see the author guidlines for further information.

Oikos

ISSN: 0030-1299eISSN: 1600-0706

Oikos is a journal issued by the Nordic Ecological Society and is one of the leading peer-reviewed journals in ecology. Oikos publishes original and innovative research on all aspects of ecology. Emphasis is on theoretical and empirical work aimed at generalization and synthesis across taxa, systems and ecological disciplines. Papers should be well founded in ecological theory and contribute to new developments in ecology by reporting novel theory or critical experimental results. Confirming or extending the established literature is given less priority. Synthesis of new and emerging fields in ecology and beyond is encouraged. Papers of review character should strive for conceptual unification and being a point of departure for future work rather than restrospective summaries of established fields or topics. Papers in Brevia, Horizons and Forum sections are given high priority in the publication process. Oikos Sections Research papers - Research papers report original research in all fields of ecology and should aim at a readership from a wide range of ecological disciplines. Research papers' manuscripts should have a maximum of 50 references. Forum - Forum is the section in Oikos where syntheses and reviews are published. The format can be short notes or more substantial reviews aimed at bringing fields together, to transgress existing boundaries and to syntesize larger fields or seemingly disparate areas, and to offer new ways of interpreting existing data. Forum articles should strive for conceptual unification and being a point of departure for future work rather than just summarizing existing bodies of theory and data. It is an arena for challenging current thinking on ecological issues by revising established concepts and received knowledge through critical experiments or new theory so that new ground can be broken. Horizons - Horizons papers are short (maximum two printed pages) essays on the past and the future of ecological research, an exploration of new territories of ecology by a more speculative, yet scientifically sound, reasoning on topics that also may be more peripheral to traditional ecological thinking. Manuscripts are judged strongly on their novelty and originality. The Horizons section invites authors to look ahead, to go beyond the contemporary and mainstream and serves as an arena for informed reflections and outlooks within or outside the field of ecology. It is aimed at capturing emerging ideas and concepts by using existing knowledge and insights as a springboard for pointing in new directions and for breaking new grounds. Horizon articles may be solicited but are always sent out for review before possible publication. Brevia - Brevia offers the possibility to comment on and discuss papers published in Oikos. Brevia articles should be brief, succcinct and to the point and should broaden and widen the scope of published ccontributions, or debate controversial findings. It is open for discussions on fundamental issues in ecology or the way the science of ecology is done. Manuscripts should rarely be longer than approximately 5 pages with a very brief (maximum 200 words) opening summary and with a reference list in the standard Oikos format. Oikos does not publish book reviews. Oikos is published in cooperation with the journals Ecography, Lindbergia, J. Avian Biology, the internet journal Web Ecology and the monograph series Ecological Bulletins. Manuscripts may be transferred between these journals according to profile.
