The Lancet Planetary Health

eISSN: 2542-5196
DOAJ Logo

The Lancet Planetary Health is a monthly, open access, online-only title in The Lancet's growing family of specialty journals. Building on the foundation of The Rockefeller Foundation-Lancet Commission on planetary health, the journal is committed to publishing high-quality original Research Articles, Editorials, Comments, and Correspondence that contribute to defining and advancing planetary health worldwide.

Planetary health has been defined as the health of the human civilisation and the state of the natural systems on which it depends.

To explain this idea in simple terms we need to think of humanity as one of the key driving forces of global environmental change. We live on a planet that is shaped by the activity of human beings. We have benefited from the exploitation of the natural resources of the environment, and this has allowed us to develop, flourish, and to improve our health. But, we have now gone beyond a sustainable limit. The planet we live in is in grave danger. Species are under pressure. The environmental changes to the climate, the water, the land, and ecosystems are challenging life on the Earth with serious implications for our health and wellbeing. The way we think about the planet needs to be revised and with it the approach we take to interact with it.

It is against this backdrop that we welcome The Lancet Planetary Health. In keeping with our other journals, The Lancet Planetary Health will offer rapid publication of research online within 8-12 weeks from submission. We invite all original research submissions that have the potential to change or challenge the interplay between the environment and human health. We take a broad and inclusive approach to planetary health, and we especially wish to emphasise our interest in interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research.

Submissions are subjected to The Lancet's usual rigorous standards of external and statistical peer review, and are edited by experienced copy editors to the highest standards. All original research remains the property of the author, and reuse by others is permitted under either CC BY or CC BY-NC-ND Creative Commons licences, depending on authors' preferences or funding bodies' mandates.

The Leadership Quarterly

ISSN: 1048-9843

Disciplines such as political science, organizational psychology and sociology are becoming so specialized that, for scholars and lay persons alike, the study of leadership is now highly fractionated. Studies of US presidents in political science seldom make reference to the psychological literature of chief executive officers. Studies of school principals appear without attention to the impact of cultural dynamics seen in cultural anthropology.Management and administrative staffs responsible for supervisory and executive development need to scan 20 to 30 journals across many disciplines to keep current in the study of leadership. This journal brings together a focus on leadership for scholars, consultants, practicing managers, executives and administrators, as well as those numerous university faculty members across the world who teach leadership as a college course. It provides timely publication of leadership research and applications and has a global reach. It also focuses on yearly reviews of a broad range of leadership topics on a rotating basis and emphasizes cutting edge areas through special issues.Benefits to authorsWe also provide many author benefits, such as free PDFs, a liberal copyright policy, special discounts on Elsevier publications and much more. Theoretical Computer Science

ISSN: 0304-3975

Theoretical Computer Science is mathematical and abstract in spirit, but it derives its motivation from practical and everyday computation. Its aim is to understand the nature of computation and, as a consequence of this understanding, provide more efficient methodologies. All papers introducing or studying mathematical, logic and formal concepts and methods are welcome, provided that their motivation is clearly drawn from the field of computing.Any queries about submissions and peer review should be addressed to the TCS editorial office: tcs@elsevier.com.Papers published in Theoretical Computer Science are grouped in three sections according to their nature. The first section `Algorithms, automata, complexity and games' is devoted to the study of algorithms and their complexity using analytical, combinatorial or probabilistic methods. It includes the whole field of abstract complexity (i.e. all the results about the hierarchies that can be defined using Turing machines), the whole field of automata and language theory (including automata on infinite words and infinitary languages), the whole field of geometrical (graphic) applications and the whole field of measurement of system performance using statistical methods. The second section,`Logic, semantics and theory of programming', is devoted to formal methods to check properties of programs or implement formally described languages; it contains all papers dealing with semantics of sequential and parallel programming languages. All formal methods treating these problems are published in this section, including rewriting techniques, abstract data types, automatic theorem proving, calculi such as SCP or CCS, Petri nets, new logic calculi and developments in categorical methods. The third section, 'Natural Computing', is devoted to the study of computing occurring in nature and computing inspired by nature. In the rapidly evolving field of computer science, natural computing plays an important role as the catalyst for the synergy of human designed computing with the computing going on in nature. This synergy leads to a deeper and broader understanding of the nature of computation. Although natural computing is concerned also with experiments and applications, this section of Theoretical Computer Science is focused on the theoretical aspects of natural computing with clear relevance to computing. Among others, it will contain papers dealing with the theoretical issues in evolutionary computing, neural networks, molecular computing, and quantum computing.

Theoretical and Applied Fracture Mechanics

ISSN: 0167-8442eISSN: 1872-7638

Theoretical and Applied Fracture Mechanics: Aims & ScopesTheoretical and Applied Fracture Mechanics' aims & scopes have been re-designed to cover both the theoretical, applied, and numerical aspects associated with those cracking related phenomena taking place, at a micro-, meso-, and macroscopic level, in materials/components/structures of any kind. The journal aims to cover the cracking/mechanical behaviour of materials/components/structures in those situations involving both time-independent and time-dependent system of external forces/moments (such as, for instance, quasi-static, impulsive, impact, blasting, creep, contact, and fatigue loading). Since, under the above circumstances, the mechanical behaviour of cracked materials/components/structures is also affected by the environmental conditions, the journal would consider also those theoretical/experimental research works investigating the effect of external variables such as, for instance, the effect of corrosive environments as well as of high/low-temperature. The journal will also consider technical articles assessing the cracking behaviour of new materials used in modern and alternative applications, i.e., not only strictly related to engineering. Further, the most advanced technological findings in the surface engineering field are seen to strongly influence the cracking/mechanical behaviour of materials. Accordingly, technical articles investigating, both from a theoretical and an experimental point of view, the existing interactions between the above aspects and the material cracking behaviour will be considered for publication. The modelling of the phenomena of interest for the Journal can be based on the conventional linear-elastic/elasto-plastic Fracture Mechanics concepts as well as on novel (or emerging) theories. The journal is keen to publish new/alternative modelling/design approaches, provided that such innovative theories are soundly based on the state-of-the-art knowledge and, when possible, validated through appropriate experimental results. In more general terms, cracks act as stress/strain concentrators. Accordingly, the Journal is very keen to consider for publication also those studies investigating the effect on the mechanical behaviour of materials/components/structures of different kinds of stress/strain concentrators such as defects, microstructural in-homogeneities, and, above all, notches of any kind. In more detail, one of the new features of Theoretical and Applied Fracture Mechanics is releasing regular issues addressing, in a systematic way, the notch mechanics problem. In this setting, as for those studies involving cracks, such special issues will consider not only conventional, but also innovative materials subjected to both time-independent and time-dependent loading. The increasing computational power of modern computers is strongly encouraging the scientific community to develop novel methodologies suitable for modelling the mechanical behaviour of materials/components/structures containing any kind of stress/strain concentrators (i.e., not only cracks and notches, but also defects and microstructural in-homogeneities). Accordingly, Theoretical and Applied Fracture Mechanics aims to publish, through regular issues fully focussed on computational mechanics, also those technical articles addressing the theoretical/computational aspects leading to an efficient and accurate modelling of the behaviour, at a micro-, meso-, and macroscopic level, of materials and structures containing stress/strain raisers of any kind.In light of the new aims and scopes characterising Theoretical and Applied Fracture Mechanics, the journal will be organised according to the following topical issues:Miscellany of technical articles fully meeting the aims and scopes of the journal;Technical articles investigating the notch mechanics field;Technical articles devoted to the computational mechanics aspects;Themed threads, guest-edited by experts, where the themes of interest could not necessarily be addressed in a single issue: this would create a string of issues showing, over years, the progresses made in a specific area of the Fracture/Notch/Computational Mechanics discipline. The themed threads will be guest-edited not only by the Members of the Editorial Board, but also, as mentioned above, by leading experts. In this setting, the Editorial Boards is interested in considering possible topics directly suggested by leading experts also willing to act as guest-editors. Finally, the Journal will consider the publication of special issues containing the extended version of high-level papers presented at prominent international conferences. However, authors submitting papers of an experimental nature should include raw data with their submissions in order to support the findings being presented. The purpose of this requirement is to (1) Guard against falsifying test data and (2) Mitigate the misrepresentation of test data.

Thin-Walled Structures

ISSN: 0263-8231eISSN: 1879-3223

Thin-walled structures comprises an important and growing proportion of engineering construction with areas of application becoming increasingly diverse, ranging from aircraft, bridges, ships and oil rigs to storage vessels, industrial buildings and warehouses. Many factors, including cost and weight economy, new materials and processes and the growth of powerful methods of analysis have contributed to this growth, and led to the need for a journal which concentrates specifically on structures in which problems arise due to the thinness of the walls. This field includes cold– formed sections, plate and shell structures, reinforced plastics structures and aluminium structures, and is of importance in many branches of engineering. The primary criterion for consideration of papers in Thin–Walled Structures is that they must be concerned with thin–walled structures or the basic problems inherent in thin–walled structures. Provided this criterion is satisfied no restriction is placed on the type of construction, material or field of application. Papers on theory, experiment, design, etc., are published and it is expected that many papers will contain aspects of all three.

Topology and its Applications

ISSN: 0166-8641eISSN: 1879-3207

Topology and its Applications is primarily concerned with publishing original research papers of moderate length. However, a limited number of carefully selected survey or expository papers are also included. The mathematical focus of the journal is that suggested by the title: Research in Topology. It is felt that it is inadvisable to attempt a definitive description of topology as understood for this journal. Certainly the subject includes the algebraic, general, geometric, and set-theoretic facets of topology as well as areas of interactions between topology and other mathematical disciplines, e.g. topological algebra, topological dynamics, functional analysis, category theory. Since the roles of various aspects of topology continue to change, the non-specific delineation of topics serves to reflect the current state of research in topology. At regular intervals, the journal publishes a section entitled Open Problems in Topology, edited by J. van Mill and G.M. Reed. This is a status report on the 1100 problems listed in the book of the same name published by North-Holland in 1990, edited by van Mill and Reed.Benefits to authorsWe also provide many author benefits, such as free PDFs, a liberal copyright policy, special discounts on Elsevier publications and much more. Transport Policy

ISSN: 0967-070X
Transport Policy is an international refereed journal aimed at bridging the gap between theory and practice in transport. Its subject areas reflect the concerns of policymakers in government, industry, voluntary organisations and the public at large, providing independent, original and rigorous analysis to understand how policy decisions have been taken, monitor their effects, and suggest how they may be improved.

The journal covers the entire transport sector including all modes: land, sea and air; public and private; motorised and non-motorised; passenger and freight, including transport in the context of related sectors such as energy, housing, industry and planning. Policy concerns in transport are wide and cover safety, efficiency, economic development, local and global environmental impacts, energy, land-use, equity and access.

Papers are welcome which advance the methods informing policy as well as those which provide an analysis of policies themselves, but papers are expected to have clear policy relevance. Papers are also welcomed which focus on understanding the nature and influences affecting policy change, including technical, attitudinal, institutional, structural and political constraints, including those which provide a comparative analysis. Papers that focus entirely on individual case studies are more appropriate for our sister journal Case Studies in Transport Policy.

Types of paper:

Full articles: Articles should normally be no longer that 8000 words. Authors are responsible for ensuring that all manuscripts (whether original or revised) are accurate before final submission. Manuscripts must be submitted on-line through Elsevier Editorial System (EES). Initial submissions may be submitted through the "My Paper My Way" approach, but final acceptances will require completion to the Elsevier standard.

Shorter Items: Shorter items of between 1500 and 2500 words are also welcomed. These can take the form of a Topical Issues paper which allows for the expression of reasoned opinion which may stimulate debate. Such articles should clearly signal how the debate relates to the literature and why it is topical for a significant part of the global readership. This section also welcomes reports on noteworthy developments from conferences and seminars. The editors may invite responses to such papers from other commentators. The shorter form article is not well suited to describing research projects.

Special Issues: Proposals for Special Issues are welcome. Proposals should contain a clear set of objectives, and indication of the number of papers and likely authors. All papers in Special Issues are refereed to the same standard as normal submitted papers.

Trends in Neuroscience and Education

ISSN: 2452-0837eISSN: 2211-9493

Trends in Neuroscience and Education aims to bridge the gap between our increasing basic cognitive and neuroscience understanding of learning and the application of this knowledge in educational settings. It provides a forum for original translational research on using systems neuroscience findings to improve educational outcome, as well as for reviews on basic and applied research as relevant to education, project reports, best practice examples, and opinions regarding evidence based educational policies and related subjects.Just as 200 years ago, medicine was little more than a mixture of bits of knowledge, fads and plain quackery without a basic grounding in a scientific understanding of the body, and just as in the middle of the nineteenth century, Hermann von Helmholtz, Ernst Wilhelm von Brücke, Emil Du Bois-Reymond and a few others got together and drew up a scheme for what medicine should be (i.e., applied natural science), we believe that this can be taken as a model for what should happen in the field of education. In many countries, education is merely the field of ideology, even though we know that how children learn is not a question of left or right political orientation.Contrary to the skeptics (who claim that "brain science […] is not ready to relate neuronal processes to classroom outcomes", Cf. Hirsh-Pasek K, Bruer JT, 2007), we believe that we know today more about the neuroscience of learning than Helmholtz et al. back then knew about the body. In fact, from our perspective very little was known, as cellular pathology, microbiology and pharmacology hardly existed as domains of scientific investigation, let alone as tools for physicians. But the very idea - medicine is applied science - caught on and led to unprecedented and dramatic improvements in medicine. In our view, this is precisely what we must do in order to make progress in education. "You claim all learning is taking place in the brain. If that's so, which type of preschool is most effective?" - From a medical perspective, it is obvious that a neuroscientist cannot answer such questions occasionally posed by educators or educational policy makers. But it is just as clear that the answers will come from research informed by developmental cognitive neuroscience. Trends in Neuroscience and Education will foster activities on the translational research that is needed.Neuroscience is to education what biology is to medicine and physics is to architecture. Biochemistry is not enough to cure a patient, and physics is not enough to build a bridge. But you cannot perform great work, neither in medicine nor in architecture, against the laws of physics or biology. And in fact, they will inform you about many constraints and rule out a great many of projects right from the start as failures.

Tunnelling and Underground Space Technology

ISSN: 0886-7798eISSN: 1878-4364

Tunnelling and Underground Space Technology is an international journal which publishes authoritative articles encompassing the development of innovative uses of underground space and the results of high quality research into improved, more cost-effective techniques for the planning, geo-investigation, design, construction, operation and maintenance of underground and earth-sheltered structures. The journal provides an effective vehicle for the improved worldwide exchange of information on developments in underground technology - and the experience gained from its use - and is strongly committed to publishing papers on the interdisciplinary aspects of creating, planning, and regulating underground space. Towards this end, up-to-date reports of the International Tunnelling Association (ITA) working groups and important papers from major conferences sponsored by the ITA and other bodies are a regular feature of the journal.Incorporation of Trenchless Technology Research, which provides an international forum for the presentation and discussion of the latest research and developments in all areas pertaining to trenchless technology, widened the scope of TUST to cover the installation, repair, and renewal of underground pipelines, ducts, and cables while eliminating the need for continuous surface excavation. The techniques include pipe jacking, microtunnelling, auger boring, pipe bursting, pipe splitting, pipe ramming, directional drilling and steerable and non-steerable moling, together with all methods of relining and rehabilitation. The performance of newly installed and rehabilitated pipes equally lies within the scope of the journal, while the influence of trenchless technology on the surrounding environment is central to the debate on the subject. Publication of research dealing with the relative direct and social costs of traditional and trenchless pipe laying, with novel geotechnical applications of trenchless technology, and with locating and mapping of the existing buried utility service infrastructure is equally encouraged.
