Journal Guide

The Journal of Development Economics publishes original research papers relating to all aspects of economic development - from immediate policy concerns to structural problems of underdevelopment. The emphasis is on quantitative or analytical work, which is novel and relevant. The Journal does not publish book reviews. We welcome papers that take up questions in development economics that are of interest to the general readers of the journal, and then use data from a particular country or region to answer them. However, we do not publish articles that are essentially in-depth studies of a specific country, region, case, or event whose findings are unlikely to be of great interest to the general readers of the journal. In our review process we pre-screen all papers, some of which are immediately rejected. This includes papers that are not considered to be a good fit in terms of the topic or the methodology even though development is a broad field and sometimes this is a matter of subjective judgment. This also includes papers that fall short of our high standards, in terms of the contribution or value added to the literature, or in terms of methodological rigor. Under normal circumstances, an author cannot submit (either s/he directly or through a co-author) more than three papers within any 12 month period. Papers that are once rejected by the JDE will not be considered for publication again, even if the authors use a new dataset or a new model. Territory, Politics, Governance is an interdisciplinary journal from the Regional Studies Association.  It is committed to the development of theory and research in territorial politics and the governance of space.  This journal creates a platform on which to explore the interface between territory, politics, economy, identity and the organisation of political space. It confronts topical and emergent issues of world economic and political concern. The journal publishes original, high quality international scholarship from this growing, international and increasingly vibrant field directed at a worldwide academic audience and at policy makers, activists and other communities of practice.

The journal is under consideration for inclusion in Social Science Citation Index and will have a significant circulation footprint from Volume 1, Issue 1 as it is distributed with its sister journals, Regional Studies and Spatial Economic Analysis. It will be essential reading for academics and practitioners alike.

With the advantages of being a new journal with shorter average turnaround from submission to review to decision the journal aims to publish two issues in 2013, three in 2014, moving to quarterly from 2015.

To be accepted, a paper must adhere to a high standard of scholarship and make an important contribution to this emerging field. Original paper submissions are sought from political scientists, geographers, sociologists, planners, lawyers, humanists and others working on territorial politics and the governance of space.

We encourage contributions that develop the field and promote communication across spatial and disciplinary borders. The following examples illustrate some of the subjects of interest:

Every review article published will advance existing knowledge and highlight new directions being taken at the forefront of expanding subject areas by synthesis, evaluation and discussion of previously published literature. The value of such articles to the readership is increased with comment and opinion provided by the author from a specific context. Authors may further enhance their article with the addition of supplementary material such as videos, datasets and applications.

Articles may be extensive, providing comprehensive coverage of a relatively broad or cross-disciplinary subject area, or they may be much shorter providing an in-depth overview of a very specific topic, and authors may choose to include a proportion of their own primary research data to support their arguments. From time to time, 'Invited Earth-Science Reviews' will be published about topics of exceptional interest.

Other styles of 'review' article will be considered; these include critical reviews of methods used in the geosciences, case studies which illustrate and provide critical review of concepts of global significance, and articles that use previously published literature as a basis to develop aspects of industrial or social policy relevant to the earth sciences.

Submissions that simply aggregate previous literature and do not build on current awareness, or those that are structured like a primary research paper, are unlikely to be accepted for publication. Authors of primary research articles are encouraged to submit their work to a subject-appropriate journal, rather than to Earth-Science Reviews.

Earth Science Reviews offers authors the rare opportunity to explore a particular subject without any limitation on the number of words used. We encourage authors to adopt a writing style which balances conciseness with the need to do justice to their chosen subject. Therefore, authors of review articles in excess of around 20,000 words should first discuss their idea by email with one of the journal editors, copied to Tim Horscroft, the Review Papers Coordinator, (timothy.horscroft@elsevier.com), to ensure the project's suitability for potential publication.

Analytica Chimica Acta provides a forum for the rapid publication of original research, and critical reviews dealing with all aspects of fundamental and applied modern analytical science. The journal welcomes the submission of research papers which report studies concerning the development of new and significant analytical methodologies. In determining the suitability of submitted articles for publication, particular scrutiny will be placed on the degree of novelty and significance of the research and the extent to which it adds to existing knowledge in analytical chemistry.Manuscripts detailing fundamental research on all aspects of analytical theory and methodology (including chemometric techniques), such as innovative instrumental, chemical and biological approaches, detectors and sensors, sample treatment methods and data treatment are especially encouraged. On the other hand, papers describing the use of routine analytical methods or straightforward extension of these methods to new sample matrices will normally not be published unless new developments are described which can be demonstrated to give very clear and quantifiable advantages over existing methods. In all submissions to the journal, authors must address the question of how their proposed methodology compares with previously reported methods.It will normally be expected that where new analytical methodologies and developments are described these will be applied to a sample matrix of suitable analytical complexity. In such cases appropriate validation of the method should be provided, together with proper statistical treatment of data. Analytical performance characteristics of new methods should be given, including sensitivity, detection limits, accuracy, precision, and interferences.Reviews are normally written by prior agreement of the editors. Potential authors are encouraged to discuss the subject matter of a proposed review with the review editor, and will be asked to provide a brief outline of the subject matter of the proposed review. Review articles should be sufficiently broad in scope to appeal to a wide cross-section of the journal's readership, but should be specific enough to permit discussion to be made at an appropriate depth. Basic methodology and principles should not be included in reviews, but suitable reference should be made to sources of this information. Above all, reviews should be critical rather than enumerative and should provide the reader with expert opinion regarding the relative merits of the various published approaches to the topic under review. Figures and Tables are encouraged in review articles. Tutorials describing the fundamental principles and practical operational details of a given analytical technique, sample processing approach or chemometric method are also welcome.

To this end, SoftwareX aims to support publication of research software in such a way that:

• The software is given a stamp of scientific relevance, and provided with a peer-reviewed recognition of scientific impact;
• The software developers are given the credits they deserve;
• The software is citable, allowing traditional metrics of scientific excellence to apply;
• The academic career paths of software developers are supported rather than hindered;
• The software is publicly available for inspection, validation, and re-use.

Above all, SoftwareX aims to inform researchers about software applications, tools and libraries with a (proven) potential to impact the process of scientific discovery in various domains. The journal is multidisciplinary and accepts submissions from within and across subject domains such as those represented within the broad thematic areas below:

• Mathematical and Physical Sciences;
• Environmental Sciences;
• Medical and Biological Sciences;
• Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences.

Originating from these broad thematic areas, the journal also welcomes submissions of software that works in cross cutting thematic areas, such as citizen science, cybersecurity, digital economy, energy, global resource stewardship, health and wellbeing, etcetera.

SoftwareX specifically aims to accept submissions representing domain-independent software that may impact more than one research domain.

Domain independent underpinning software tools and technologies have for too long been underrepresented in academic literature. We wish to ensure that these software items get academic recognition and welcome submissions of software tools and services that may otherwise not have a publication home. Examples include mathematical or image processing libraries or methodologies, visualization tools, data management, etcetera.

Through the quality of the description and of the (potential) impact of the software deposited we aim that significant reuse will occur both within and without the original developing domain and therefore encourage consideration of this reuse factor when submitting and in the language used within the description.

Submissions to SoftwareX consist of two major parts:

• A short descriptive paper of max. 6 pages;
• An open source software distribution with support material.

The Journal of Experimental Botany publishes high-quality primary research and review papers in the plant sciences. These papers cover a range of disciplines from molecular and cellular physiology and biochemistry through whole plant physiology to community physiology.Full-length primary papers should contribute to our understanding of how plants develop and function, and should provide new insights into biological processes. The journal will not publish purely descriptive papers or papers that report a well-known process in a species in which the process has not been identified previously. Articles should be concise and generally limited to 10 printed pages.JXB publishes Review Articles on a regular basis. JXB reviews should be scholarly articles; Not only should they summarise relevant information, but they should add value to current knowledge through constructive academic criticism, informed insight or well considered foresight. The Journal of Human Evolution concentrates on publishing the highest quality papers covering all aspects of human evolution. The central focus is aimed jointly at palaeoanthropological work, covering human and primate fossils, and at comparative studies of living species, including both morphological and molecular evidence. These include descriptions of new discoveries, interpretative analyses of new and previously described material, and assessments of the phylogeny and palaeobiology of primate species.In addition to original research papers, space is allocated for the rapid publication of short communications on new discoveries, such as exciting new fossils, or on matters of topical interest, such as reports on meetings. Cancer, the second leading cause of death, is a heterogenous group of over 100 diseases. Cancer is characterized by disordered and deregulated cellular and stromal proliferation accompanied by reduced cell death with the ability to survive under stresses of nutrient and growth factor deprivation, hypoxia, and loss of cell-to-cell contacts. At the molecular level, cancer is a genetic disease that develops due to the accumulation of mutations over time in somatic cells. The phenotype includes genomic instability and chromosomal aneuploidy that allows for acceleration of genetic change. Malignant transformation and tumor progression of any cell requires immortalization, loss of checkpoint control, deregulation of growth, and survival. A tremendous amount has been learned about the numerous cellular and molecular genetic changes and the host-tumor interactions that accompany tumor development and progression. It is the goal of the field of Molecular Oncology to use this knowledge to understand cancer pathogenesis and drug action, as well as to develop more effective diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for cancer. This includes preventative strategies as well as approaches to treat metastases. With the availability of the human genome sequence and genomic and proteomic approaches, a wealth of tools and resources are generating even more information. The challenge will be to make biological sense out of the information, to develop appropriate models and hypotheses and to translate information for the clinicians and the benefit of their patients. Cancer Biology & Therapy aims to publish original research on the molecular basis of cancer, including articles with translational relevance to diagnosis or therapy. We will include timely reviews covering the broad scope of the journal. The journal will also publish op-ed pieces and meeting reports of interest. The goal is to foster communication and rapid exchange of information through timely publication of important results using traditional as well as electronic formats. The journal and the outstanding Editorial Board will strive to maintain the highest standards for excellence in all activities to generate a valuable resource.

Digital Creativity is a major peer-reviewed journal at the intersection of the creative arts and digital technologies. It publishes articles of interest to those involved in the practical task and theoretical aspects of making or using digital media in creative contexts. By the term 'creative arts' we include such disciplines as fine art, graphic design, illustration, photography, printmaking, sculpture, 3D design, interaction design, product design, textile and fashion design, film making, animation, games design, music, dance, drama, creative writing, poetry, interior design, architecture, and urban design. Disability and Rehabilitation: Assistive Technology along with Disability and Rehabilitation seek to encourage a better understanding of all aspects of disability and to promote rehabilitation science, practice and policy aspects of the rehabilitation process. Taken together, both journals represent an important forum for the dissemination and exchange of ideas amongst global health practitioners and researchers. 

The mission of Disability and Rehabilitation: Assistive Technology is to advance the practice and science of interdisciplinary and integrative assistive technology service delivery and product design internationally so that persons with disabilities, chronic illnesses, and challenges to the performance of activities and participation in life roles, achieve enhanced functioning and life quality. 

Assistive technology focuses on both equipping individuals with the most appropriate technologies and also removing barriers to functioning that exist in the environment.  Topics range from everyday/mainstream to specialized devices, and include: exoskeltons and robotics; smart homes; information and communication technologies and computerized systems; ergonomics; universal design; ambient assistive technology; telerehabilitation; job and environmental accommodations; and methods of service delivery.  

Disability and Rehabilitation: Assistive Technology is an international and multidisciplinary journal, published six times a year. The Journal publishes review articles and original research on assistive technology devices, services, user experiences, education and training, and policies. The journal also publishes supplements, special issues and special sections. Because the field is broad, submissions include experimental investigations, survey research, case studies, systematic reviews and product development and testing. Theoretical and conceptual papers and the discussion of professional issues and international/national policies and standards are also published.
