Discourse, Context and Media

ISSN: 2211-6958eISSN: 2211-6966

The mechanisms and contexts of human communication are rapidly changing in the face of new domains of interaction, new technologies, and new global cultures. Contemporary forms of discourse often involve interaction with and through a plethora of technologies. These mechanisms and contexts provide both new artefacts of study and new tools for discourse analysts.Discourse, Context & Media is an international journal dedicated to exploring the full range of contemporary discourse work. It provides an innovative forum to present research that addresses all forms of discourse theory, data and methods - from detailed linguistic or interactional analyses to wider studies of representation, knowledge and ideology. The journal overtly seeks empirical contributions as well as papers that address the theoretical and methodological debates within discourse studies. Such approaches include, but are not limited to: conversation analysis; ethnomethodology; discursive psychology; critical discourse analysis; and sociolinguistics. The journal seeks to explore the challenges and opportunities provided to discourse scholars by digital media. Such media provide opportunities for new forms of data to be analysed, allow rethinking of existing theories and encourage the development of new models of interaction. Discourse, Context & Media is especially interested in contributions that make use of innovative methods and media for the analysis and presentation of data.

Journal of Mathematical Behavior

ISSN: 0732-3123eISSN: 1873-8028

The Journal of Mathematical Behavior solicits original research on the learning and teaching of mathematics. We are interested especially in basic research, research that aims to clarify, in detail and depth, how mathematical ideas develop in learners. As our founding editor, Robert B. Davis, wrote in 1980:Scientific study is supposed to be a no-holds-barred attempt to identify key phenomena, and by building conceptual structures and collecting data, to explain and understand these phenomena.1Over three decades, our experience confirms a founding premise of this journal: that mathematical thinking, hence mathematics learning as a social enterprise, is special. It is special because mathematics is special, both logically and psychologically. Logically, through the way that mathematical ideas and methods have been built, refined and organized for centuries across a range of cultures; and psychologically, through the variety of ways people today, in many walks of life, make sense of mathematics, develop it, make it their own. Historically, this journal has sought and welcomed papers that develop detailed, fundamental understanding of how people, in realistic settings, build, retain, communicate, apply and understand important mathematical ideas. Our intended audience includes researchers who concentrate on the learning of mathematics and science, psychologists, mathematicians, cognitive scientists, teachers, teacher educators, curriculum developers, parents, administrators, and policy makers. On this basis, we especially encourage basic studies that might indicate a range of possibilities not commonly recognized. Such studies might clarify potential obstacles to student understanding of mathematics; describe and analyze relevant efforts to improve curriculum or pedagogy in mathematics, at any level, from early childhood through adulthood; offer analyses of appropriate goals for mathematics curricula for diverse student populations; and critically discuss what might be changed in curricula or in learning experiences. In addition to more formal studies, the editors welcome dialogue, discussion, and debate. We encourage authors to submit short papers that continue, extend, modify, or challenge work that has appeared in JMB.Our hope is to facilitate important progress. In Davis' words:Manuscripts are accepted primarily because they report something important, and because they will prove valuable to many readers.21 Journal of Mathematical Behavior, Vol. 3, No. 1, p. 2112 Ibid., p. vi.

NanoEthics: Studies of New and Emerging Technologies

ISSN: 1871-4757eISSN: 1871-4765

Rationale Nanoscale technologies are currently surrounded by both hype and fear. Optimists suggest that these technologies are desperately needed to solve problems of terrorism, global warming, the shortage of clean water, land degradation and health. Pessimists fear the loss of privacy and loss of autonomy, 'grey goo' and weapons of mass destruction, and serious environmental and health risks. There is also concern about the fair distribution of the costs and benefits of the technology. The field needs a forum for informed discussion of ethical and social issues related to nanotechnology to counterbalance popular discussions and fragmented representation of opinions and findings. NanoEthics: Ethics for Technologies that Converge at the Nanoscale provides this forum. Nature of the journal This journal will be a multidisciplinary forum for exploration of issues presented by converging technology applications. While the central focus of the journal will be on the ethical issues, it is recognized that these discussions must be informed by, at least, the physical, biological and social sciences and the law. Focus NanoEthics: Ethics for Technologies that Converge at the Nanoscale will focus on the philosophically and scientifically rigorous examination of the ethical and societal considerations and the public and policy concerns inherent in nanotechnology research and development. These issues include both individual and societal problems, and include individual health, wellbeing and human enhancement, human integrity and autonomy, distribution of the costs and benefits, threats to culture and tradition and to political and economic stability. Additionally there are meta-issues including the neutrality or otherwise of technology, designing technology in a value-sensitive way, and the control of scientific research. Re, adership and Editorial Board This journal will be of interest to researchers, scholars and students in the various disciplines related to nanotechnology, and to scientific and technological policymakers. The composition of the editorial board reflects the multidisciplinary approach of the journal.

8216;The Intellectual Origins of New Political Science' 8211; FREE Article AccessClyde Barrow8216;In this article Clyde Barrow develops both an intellectual and an organizational analysis of 8220;new political science8221; especially as related to the Caucus for a New Political Science. The article makes clear both intellectual and organizational contributions which continue to define the ideas and political actions that mark new political science. Highly insightful for younger members of the discipline'. Bruce E Wright, Ph.D, Professor Emeritus of Political Science, California State University, FullertonNew Political Science is the official journal of the Caucus for a New Political Science (CNPS), an Organized Section of the American Political Science Association, and serves as an organ for its goals and interests. The CNPS was formed in order to help make the study of politics relevant to the struggle for a better world. As an educational organization, it offers a forum for diverse positions within the framework of this struggle. At the same time, it recognizes that political study and criticism, if it is to be effective, must ultimately transcend the barriers of professionalism and become a function of the community as a whole. Accordingly, New Political Science seeks access to general as well as specialized audiences. The focus of New Political Science as official journal of the CNPS, is to develop analyses which reflect a commitment to progressive social change and which treat topics that are within exploratory phases of development in political science. It insists on the broadest possible definition of 'politics', and holds that political and cultural development cannot be understood in isolation from each other.Peer ReviewAll research articles in this journal have undergone rigorous peer review, based on initial editor screening and anonymized refereeing by two anonymous referees. International Journal for Parasitology

ISSN: 0020-7519eISSN: 1879-0135

The International Journal for Parasitology publishes the results of original research in all aspects of basic and applied parasitology, including all the fields covered by its Specialist Editors, and ranging from parasites and host-parasite relationships of intrinsic biological interest to those of social and economic importance in human and veterinary medicine and agriculture. Original research includes the development of novel and innovative concepts and ideas, as well as experimental and observational science that raises new hypotheses. In applied parasitology, it will tend to favour contributions of broader significance to the subject rather than narrow, highly specialised applications. The principal form of publication is the full length paper which contains substantial results from a major program of research. The Journal also provides a medium for the publication of shorter, but complete, papers reporting highly significant original findings, as Succinctus articles. It also publishes Thematic Issues incorporating papers on a topical theme and commissions papers with emphasis on shorter, focussed Reviews of topical issues and strategically important subjects. The Journal encourages critical comment and debate on matters of current controversy in parasitology via "Current Opinions".Most downloaded papersBenefits to authorsWe also provide many author benefits, such as free PDFs, a liberal copyright policy, special discounts on Elsevier publications and much more.
